CLEAN FRIEND CAMPAIGN – PET HYGIENE

To some pets are emotional support animals while to others it could be a form of security or guard stationed by their side. Dogs, cats, birds etc could be owned by a person, however, pet hygiene is essential not only for the health and wellbeing of the animal but also for the environment and human health. Pets can contribute to the spread of diseases such as E.coli and Salmonella, which can lead to waterborne illnesses and other health issues.

Lee\’s Foundation, a non-profit organisation focused on Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) solutions, recognises the importance of pet hygiene in relation to WASH, open defecation, and water quality hence it has decided to launch a campaign in that regards.

The Clean friend Campaign sprung up as a result of the undeniable bond between humans and pets , most especially dogs which can be found in almost every home. Open defecation is a major issue in many communities, especially in rural areas. When pets are not properly trained or cared for, they may contribute to this problem by defecating in public spaces. This can lead to contamination of nearby water sources, putting both humans and animals at risk of contracting waterborne illnesses.

Proper pet hygiene can help prevent this issue. By regularly cleaning up after pets and disposing of waste properly, communities can reduce the risk of contamination and improve overall sanitation. Therefore, the need for proper sensitisation on per WASH related matters would be highly beneficial to the community.

In addition to open defecation, pets can also contribute to water pollution. When pet waste is not properly disposed of, it can make its way into nearby water sources, contaminating them and posing a risk to human and animal health. This can be especially problematic in areas where water sources are scarce or already contaminated.

Lee\’s Foundation encourages pet owners to practice proper pet hygiene, including regular bathing, grooming, and waste disposal, to help protect the environment and improve WASH conditions in their communities. The foundation also advocates for education and awareness programs to promote responsible pet ownership and proper pet hygiene practices.

By working together to promote pet hygiene and responsible pet ownership, communities can help prevent the spread of disease, improve WASH conditions, and protect the environment. Lee\’s Foundation is committed to supporting these efforts and creating a better future for everyone.
